چکیده

Since its conception, the scanning probe microscopy (SPM) has attracted increasing attention as a novel method that provides an outstanding capability for direct visualization of topological features and characterization of the local properties of organic thin films. While imaging mechanisms for organic molecules are still being debated, careful and credible studies have been performed enabling the SPM to be used for organized molecular films. In this review, our historical background and “the state of the art” of the SPM are briefly reviewed from viewpoints of local area visualization and characterization of organic ultra-thin films. Utilization of the high-resolution probes for fundamental surface studies in organic molecular system is described with practical examples and hints arising from previous SPM studies of liquid crystal monolayers.

Phase Transitions in Phospholipid Monolayers Studied by Atomic Force Microscopy and Langmuir-Blodgett Technique

The phase behaviour and surface structure of dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl choline (DPPC) monolayers at the air/water interface, in the absence and the presence of procaine, have been investigated by LangmuirBlodgett (LB) technique and atomic force microscopy. The LB films were transferred on mica, at a controlled surface pressure, characteristic for the expanded liquid to condensed liquid phase tra...

Melting of colloidal crystal films.

We study melting mechanisms in single and polycrystalline colloidal films composed of diameter-tunable microgel spheres with short-ranged repulsive interactions and confined between two glass walls. Thick films (>4 layers), thin-films (≤4 layers), and monolayers exhibit different melting behaviors. Thick films melt from grain boundaries in polycrystalline solid films and from film-wall interfac...

(001)-oriented PbTiO3 ferroelectric thin films grown on by metal-organic chemical vapour deposition

PbTiOs ferroelectric thin films have been prepared on Si (001) by metal-organic chemical vapour deposition. The ai-grown films Were characterized by scanning electmn microscopy, x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. It is shown that the films were highly (001) oriented and had essentially the same lanice constants as the bulk single crystal. However, the %-grown films were subject to intern...

Direct observation of crystal defects in an organic molecular crystals of copper hexachlorophthalocyanine by STEM-EELS

The structural analysis of crystal defects in organic thin films provides fundamental insights into their electronic properties for applications such as field effect transistors. Observation of crystal defects in organic thin films has previously been performed at rather low resolution by conventional transmission electron microscopy based on phase-contrast imaging. Herein, we apply for the fir...
